Dictionary Overview

This is probably the most popular dictionary used by students of Irish. It includes both an English-Irish and an Irish-English dictionary. It's very inexpensive, and the small size ("póca" means pocket) is convenient. You won't outgrow this dictionary until you're well advanced in the language. However, the print is very small, so anyone over twenty may find it difficult to read. (Is that a dot over the i or a fada?) There is a slightly larger edition, Foclóir Scoile, which uses a larger font and is easier to read. Both Foclóir Póca and Foclóir Scoile are published by An Gúm.

Definitely not best of type
Redwolf, California, USA. 12 Aug 2008.

When I realized I had forgotten to pack my Collins Gem dictionary on my recent trip to Ireland, I decided to pick up the similarly sized Foclóir Póca. I found it very limited in scope, even compared to the Gem. Further, the type was tiny, and very difficult to read. I ended up passing it on to a beginning Irish student who had no dictionary at all (and who had much younger eyes than mine!) and buying Foclóir Scoile instead (which has since become my favorite portable dictionary) If you're going to spend the money on a portable Irish dictionary, I'd recommend the Foclóir Scoile above this one...or if you need a really tiny one, the Collins Gem.

Focloir Poca
Treasa, Baile Atha Cliatha. 3 Jun 2008.

It does not have a comprehensive list of words and even those most commonly used may be ommitted. it is not a reliable source as there is a high probability that the word you want is not included. Don't depend on it.

I have at least five dictionaries and I keep coming back to this one as it gives useful examples for many entries and most importantly pronunciation of almost all words. I lost my copy once and missed it dearly. It had fallen out of my car and into the gutter. Luckily it was found by someone who knew me and guessed it was mine. (How many other people did she know who learned Irish?) It had been run over by at least one car and I welcomed it back like and old friend. Get this dictionary. I recommend it.
