Good Start

This book teaches functional Irish--different types of conversations, so you can feel confident starting simple conversations in Irish. It also sneaks some grammar lessons into the later chapters, so that you'll recognize the form when you see it later and will be able to adapt it.
A great place to start!

This book is wonderful for the absolute beginner. Units are arranged by topic and include dialogues to incorporate the key vocabulary and grammar being introduced. There is a small glossary and the great value of being able to read along with the tapes. It's very easy to find in the USA at bookstores like B&N and Borders, so that's a big plus as well!

This was my first language learning product and i quickly fell in love with it. I strongly recommend not only getting the book, but the package with the book and pronounciation CD's as well. I rate this product highly because it has become dear to me with its great pronounciation table in the front of the book, all the way to casual situations, lots of vocabulary, and fun pictures. The reviews in the back of each chapter are a great way to quiz yourself and go over everything that you have learned. I gave Teach Yourself, a 5 out of 5, a must have for any beginner. ^_^

A good, basic method

I have been using "Teach Yourself Irish" for a little over a year now, and I have found it to be extremely helpful. The book is structured in much the same way as a high school language text, with real-life examples, vocabulary lists, and exercises. It takes a structured approach to grammar that I think is absolutely vital to learning to use a language well. Its ready availability in the U.S. (I've found it at Borders and at Amazon.com) will appeal to American learners. I recommend buying it with the optional audio CDs, which help greatly with pronunciation. One thing keeps me from giving this five stars, and that's the (relatively few) mistakes and typos in some of the exercises, which can be confusing to a learner who doesn't happen to have access to more experienced speakers for clarification. Still, I recommend it for the student who has no access to classes as a very good second-best option (live classes, of course, being the best course when possible).
