First of all it seems to be made in powerpoint. I could live with that but the organization is absolutely horrible. Pathetically horrible. In fact, everything about this product is pretty shoddy. I can't think of one nice thing to say. I seriously regret wasting my money. Don't buy this.

This is a really good program for a beginner who is looking to obtain a wide variety of vocabulary and a basic concept of grammar for casual conversation, reading and writing. I will almost guarantee it will improve vocab and introductory grammar if there is sufficient time set aside for learning. There are many levels and subjects that make this program worthwhile, but without sitting down and utilizing each of them it's as useless as any other tutorial that sits on a shelf.

I will also add that I am not much of a computer user, so those who are more comfortable with software may find this very basic to work with (if so, take some of the following commentary with a grain of salt). I got this because I wanted to be able to do visual, auditory and typing to nail home the basics. (you can also hook up your own microphone and use it with the software for personal pronunciation skills).

I will say this though, I did not like it the first day... The package came in an envelope with instructions on how to install and that's it. This is pretty typical of most software, but since this is an educational language package, I just thought there would be an overview of the programs content and a reference guide on how to modify the lessons, layout and pace for a more personalized learning style. At first the content seemed overly simple, while the learning technique a bit difficult. The good news is, after clicking around on every icon I could, I found I could change just about everything. In addition, the number of levels and sublevels provides appropriate increasing development suitbable for a strong foundation to progress from the beginner stage. No matter how you learn, this can add to your knowledge. Like I said, there is a lot of vocab and grammar and the lessons cover a very broad range of topics: conversational phrases, verbs/nouns, people, feelings, descriptions, events, tenses and much more to progress through (even medical topics, religion, jobs, and politics).
However, this is not for intermediate levels, nor will it be as effective if used as the solo learning tool; it is a wonderful aide though. I would definitely recommend additional grammar tools to get a better grasp of lenition, irregular verbs, genetive/vocative/,declensions, etc.

This software may not come with instructions on all the changes you can make or provide a step by step plan of action, but don't be fooled by how it seems at first... tinker with it; you can make changes in each lesson, print out the each lessons vocab to see all the relevant terms before you practice the lesson, increase the dictionary content for each category, change how you enter the words/phrase (options: view only, enter only first letter of each word or enter the whole word), change the pace, the promts, etc. The advantage this has over a CD and book is you can make it work for you. If I can learn with software, anyone can!

A useful product
Redwolf, California, USA. 19 May 2005.

"TeachMe" was the first Irish-language resource I purchased when I initially started learning the language. I think it's a good, basic product, but I don't think that it should be one's sole learning tool. I find I need a more structured approach to grammar. It is, however, a GREAT vocabulary builder, and hearing the pronunciations of the words as you see them on the screen is a great asset. I would recommend it as an adjunct to a book method rather than as a primary method of study.

Multifaceted but...
Lynn, Northeastern USA. 19 May 2005.

I bought this product having no experience with Irish at all and it does a superb job of building your vocabulary and exposing you to the basics in many different ways (fill in the blank stories, flash-card style responsive work, pronunciation work, a semi-narrated dictionary function etc.) The only problems with this program are the occasional typos and sometimes missing soundfiles - so I would only reccommend using it in conjunction with a good dictionary.
